A Hazardous Profession
Large-scale automated machinery, toxic chemicals, and long shifts of repetitive work combine to make industrial work one of the most dangerous professions out there. Every year, industrial accidents are responsible for more than 1,000 deaths in the United States.
While danger is part of the job, companies have a responsibility to their employees to keep hazards minimal. Every worker is entitled to a safe workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 was designed to provide men and women with safe work environments. The act established strict health and safety standards and enacted training programs to help ensure employee safety across the nation. If a worker is hurt on the job, contractors may be held liable, since they are responsible for the safety of their employees.
An industrial accident is any workplace injury that occurs in an industrial setting. Falls are the most common, though there are many other hazards including:
Injuries can include blindness, fractures or amputations, head and spinal cord injuries, scarring or disfigurement.
Employer May Put You at Risk
Most industrial accidents happen because employers put their workers at unnecessary risk because of negligence or to increase profit. If an employer fails to comply with federal workplace standards, he or she can and should be reprimanded in a language all business owners understand. Often financial punishment is the only way to make an employer stop putting employees at risk.
Report Unsafe Conditions
If you're involved in an industrial accident, you should report the unsafe conditions and consequent injuries to your company, so you can become eligible for Workers' Compensation. Workers' compensation is insurance that covers the costs of medical treatment, lost wages, physical therapy and expenses if you are hurt on the job.
Some industrial accidents can cause severe and potentially fatal injuries. Any hazard should be brought to your employer's attention immediately to prevent anyone (or anyone else) from becoming injured. If your employer is unwilling or fails to take the necessary safety precautions in a reasonable timeframe, they should be punished.
