Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch

Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida

A Popular Convenience
In today's hurried society, convenience sells. So when the first adhesive birth control patch approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hit the market, it quickly became the most popular birth control method in the nation. Five million women preferred changing a patch once a week to taking a pill every day.

This Ortho Evra patch-manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc-works the same way the pill does. Both methods release a continuous supply of hormones to prevent ovulation and pregnancy. Then in 2005, four years after this revolutionary patch hit the shelves, the FDA reported that women who used the Ortho Evra patch were exposed to about 60 percent more estrogen than those who used birth control pills.

Increased Hormone Exposure
Experts believe that the difference in hormone exposure lies in the delivery feature of the patch. Hormones in oral contraceptives are thinned out in the digestive system, as opposed to the medication directly entering a woman's bloodstream as it does with the patch. These high levels of estrogen may increase the risk of developing blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, and other injuries.

As of November 2005, the FDA received 21 reports of life-threatening blood clots and other serious health conditions from the use of the Ortho Evra patch. Ortho McNeil Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson) is now required to include warnings about the increased risk of blood clots, strokes, heart attacks and other risks on the labels of their Ortho Evra birth control patches.

Whistleblower
While the patch's initial safety label claimed that the risks of this new "peel, stick and go" contraceptive were comparable to the risks of birth control pills, former Johnson & Johnson Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joel Lippman claims otherwise. Blowing the whistle on his previous employer, Lippman says Johnson & Johnson released dangerous products to which he objected-one being the Ortho Evra patch.
