Cribs

Birmingham, Alabama

Crib Injuries
Every year in the United States, about 26 children die because of crib injuries. Your child should be able to sleep safely without suffering painful injures or death because of a defective or dangerous crib.

The most common cause of crib injuries and death is asphyxiation. It is the parent's responsibility not to allow anything fluffy or cushiony inside the crib with a child, as these can cause asphyxiation.

But crib manufacturers also have a responsibility: to design a safe, secure piece of furniture specially designed with an infant in mind. Not all manufacturers live up to this obligation. September of 2007 marked the largest full-size crib recall in United States history.

Infant Deaths Trigger Recall
Three child deaths and seven entrapments initiated the recall by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Manufactured in China, about 1 million cribs under the names Simplicity and Graco were recalled. They were sold across the nation from 1998 to May of 2007, and recalled because of their risk of suffocation or entrapment due to faulty hardware and product design.

The crib's drop rail was the primary concern. If installed upside down, the drop-side can detach from the body of the crib, creating a dangerous hole between the side railing and mattress. This gap is where a young child's head can become trapped, resulting in asphyxiation and potential death.

Hidden Hazards
Besides suffocation, crib deaths can also result from gas poisoning. The gases phosphine, arsine or stibine (or their derivatives) are sometimes found in mattresses, and are highly toxic to a young child.

Federal and voluntary industry safety guidelines have helped address many crib hazards; the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates these standards prevent as many as 240 deaths each year. However, about 11,500 infants are admitted to the hospital each year for crib-related injuries.

If you have a crib that has been involved in a crib recall, or if your child has been injured or killed because of a faulty design, you may be able to recover monetary damages from the product manufacturer.
