Brain Injury

Birmingham, Alabama

A Life-change in Seconds
It takes only seconds to sustain injuries that can last a lifetime. Brain injuries can occur for a number of reasons. Anything from an electrical shock to a tackle on the football field could leave you with a permanent brain injury.

There are two main types of brain injuries: acquired and traumatic.

Acquired Brain Injuries
An acquired brain injury occurs when your brain cells are impaired. If the oxygen to your brain is briefly cut off or the flow is restricted, your brain can sustain injuries. Airway obstruction, electrical shock, birth injuries, or certain diseases can impede oxygen flow.

Traumatic Brain Injuries
Any type of blow to the head or severe jostle can result in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Falls are the number one cause, followed by automobile accidents, strikes to the head, and assaults. A heavy blow causes damage to the brain when the nerves, supporting tissues or blood vessels are torn or strained.

Traumatic brain injuries are classified in three degrees of severity: "mild," "moderate," and "severe." Mild TBIs can result in a loss of consciousness for several seconds or minutes. You might rouse feeling dazed or confused. Moderate TBIs are often characterized by longer periods of unconsciousness, from several minutes to a few hours. You may awake with a decreased mental state or hindered physical abilities. Severe TBIs have more serious effects, like amnesia and comas.

Traumatic brain injuries are sadly very common. About 1.4 million Americans suffer a TBI each year-50,000 of which are fatal. Symptoms do not always appear until days or even weeks later, which can make this injury difficult to detect. These symptoms can include:

  • Lasting headaches or neck aches
  • Nausea or light-headedness
  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Dizziness or trouble with balance
  • Blurry vision or sensitivity to light
  • Slow speech, thinking, or writing
  • Mood swings or constant fatigue

In Alabama if you are seriously injured, you may be able to recover damages for:

  • Medical treatment
  • In-home or nursing home care
  • Lost wages and anticipated loss of wages
  • Pain and suffering
  • Mental distress
